The Results Are In, The Message is Clear: Feature in Parks and Rec Business
May 23, 2018From playground safety to unstructured play, IPEMA featured in Play & Playground Magazine
July 6, 2018IPEMA was featured on the NBC Nightly News! A film crew recently interviewed IPEMA’s president Tom Norquist. The story focused on how old fashioned, rough and tumble, unstructured play is making a comeback, and is a game-changer; vital for kids’ creativity and independence.
When a child takes a risk in play and overcomes a challenge, they develop a great sense of accomplishment, which can lead to feeling self-confident. When risk is involved, kids also learn about consequences, which helps them in decision-making as they grow up. Children learn and practice many of the skills they will need as adults because of free play.
Tom had some great quotes in the NBC News story, including how “risk gives our children something they can use as a lifetime skill.”
Playgrounds are nature’s colorful, hands-on, open classrooms that provide learning opportunities to kids of all ages. Outdoor free play is so important, as research shows that unstructured, outdoor play gives kids so many developmental benefits, which include physical, emotional, social and cognitive skills. We’re proud to share our message with the NBC audience!
