National KidsDay, a day for celebrating childhood, is right around the corner (Sunday, August 2). Created by national children’s charity, KidsPeace, National KidsDay’s mission is to encourage adults, whether parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors, teachers or caregivers, to spend more meaningful time with children. Here at the International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA) and the Voice of Play, we believe in supporting this very mission.
“Meaningful time” has taken on a new importance these days. Kids are growing up much faster, with high-tech electronics connecting them virtually to more than any previous generation had access to. Getting children to unplug and go outside, even for just a few hours a day, helps to build their physical, emotional and cognitive skills that may suffer from too much screen time.
Taking your children to the playground – and allowing them to participate in free-play – increases their learning, growing and bonding. It also gets them excited over the small, insignificant things that we tend to lose sight of as adults. Childhood is a short stage in a person’s life, so take charge of these freedoms that make being a kid so special.
Make time to celebrate childhood this weekend—whether it is for your child, a child you know or your own childlike qualities. For more information on National KidsDay, visit www.kidspeace.org.
How will you celebrate National KidsDay? Whether you are a parent, grandparent, an aunt, uncle or a teacher, every adult plays a role in a child’s ability to be active.
